James Bell was born to Thomas Bell a local doctor in the community. At the age of 18 James applied
to West Point. In 1851 he graduated and was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant and was assigned to the 3rd Artillary Regiment.
He was a platoon commander. In 1861 when the Civil War broke out he was made a Lieutenant Colonel of the 2nd Pennslyvania
Regiment and during the course of the war he rose to the rank of Lieutenant General. At the end of the war in 1865 he retained
his commision and the permenant rank of Brigader General. In 1891 James retired from the US Army with the rank of Lieutenant
General.
James was married to a Veronica Good and they had three children Joann, Micheal, and Robert.
